During normal operation, a white calcium residue will build up on the plates of the electrolytic cell within your salt chlorine generator. The cell operates most efficiently when the salt cell is clean [5]. But in commercial water parks with massive water volumes and continuous operation, scale buildup is not just an inconvenience—it's a major operational expense.
Average cell lifespan [6][8]
Replacement cell cost [6]
Recommended inspection interval [1]
The electrolysis used by salt generators attracts calcium and other minerals to the plates. When the calcium and other minerals build up, they will reduce the effectiveness of the cell [3]. For water parks operating multiple pools with multiple salt cells, this means:
Reduced chlorine production during peak season
Frequent acid cleaning cycles (labor-intensive)
Premature cell replacement—every 3-5 years instead of 7+
Inconsistent sanitation and water quality

Cleaning your salt cell with acid too often will strip the coating off the metal plates and render the cell useless [8]. It's a delicate balance: clean enough to maintain production, but not so often that you destroy the cell.
Calcium carbonate scale forms in swimming pools when the water is over-saturated with calcium carbonate. This can be measured and predicted using the Langelier Saturation Index (LSI) [9].
You will never see calcium carbonate scale on the floor of a pool unless the scale is everywhere. True scale forms in the highest-LSI places first. Those places are inside salt chlorine generators and heaters [9].
Higher temperature means higher LSI. Hotter water makes it easier for calcium to fall out of solution [9].
Within the salt cell, the anode creates chlorine gas, while the cathode creates hydrogen gas, sodium, and hydroxide. This process attracts calcium to the plates, accelerating scale formation [9].
When the electricity changes direction in the cell (called reversing polarity), the acidic chlorine gas dissolves the scale, causing it to fracture off into white flakes that blow into the pool [9]. This is a VERY common problem in saltwater pools—those white flakes you see are scale from the cell.

Vulcan installed on main water line—protects all salt cells from scale formation
A high-quality salt cell can last 3–7 years on average, depending on use and maintenance [8]. For a water park with 10-20 salt cells, replacement costs add up quickly:
Cell replacement (10 cells @ $900 avg) | $9,000 every 3-5 years |
Annualized cost | $1,800-$3,000 |
Acid cleaning labor (monthly) | $2,000-$4,000 annually |
Cleaning chemicals | $500-$1,000 annually |
Reduced chlorine output: Scaled cells produce less chlorine, risking water quality
Emergency replacements: Cells fail during peak season
Guest complaints: Cloudy water, algae issues
Increased chemical use: Compensating with liquid chlorine
Energy waste: Cells work harder, consume more power
Every salt cell manufacturer recommends periodic acid cleaning. But acid cleaning is reactive—it removes scale after it has already formed, and the acid itself damages the cell over time.
Reactive Acid Cleaning
Cleaning required: Monthly to quarterly inspection [1][2]
Chemical hazards: Muriatic acid requires PPE, careful handling [7]
Coating damage: Over-cleaning strips titanium coating [8]
Never-ending cycle: Scale returns, cleaning repeats
Warranty void: Improper cleaning voids warranty [2]
No scraping allowed: Tools damage plates permanently [1]
Reactive only: You clean after scale has already formed
"If you use an acid solution that is too concentrated or too frequently, you will prematurely erode the titanium grid coating." [6]
Vulcan Preventive Solution
Cleaning eliminated: Scale never forms
Zero chemicals: No acid handling, no PPE
Coating protection: No acid damage, cell lasts longer
Permanent solution: Install once, protect forever
Warranty preservation: No cleaning-related damage
Zero tools needed: No scraping risk
True prevention: Scale never forms
How It Works:
Vulcan's physical impulse technology alters the crystalline structure of calcium carbonate so it cannot bond to surfaces [6]. Cells stay clean without acid—preserving the titanium coating and extending cell life 2-3x.

A water park with 20 salt cells spends $3,000-$6,000 annually on acid cleaning labor and chemicals—plus $5,000-$10,000 on premature cell replacements. Vulcan eliminates these costs while ensuring consistent chlorine production all season.
SCALE REMOVAL CASE STUDY
Facility: Traditional Moroccan Hammam Bathhouse
Location: Morocco
Application: Hot water system with extreme hardness
This traditional bathhouse faced severe scale buildup in their hot water system. The combination of high temperatures and extreme water hardness created thick scale deposits on all surfaces [9].
Scale eliminated from the system
"Water feels softer" - noticeable to customers [9]
Chemical cleaning eliminated
The same scale that coated this bathhouse's surfaces would coat your salt cell plates. If Vulcan can eliminate scale in an extreme-hardness environment, it can keep your salt cells pristine.

COMMERCIAL CASE STUDY
Facility: Supermall Karawaci (SMK)
Location: Tangerang, Indonesia
Application: Cooling towers and circulation systems
Severe scaling in water circulation systems was driving up energy costs and maintenance frequency—identical to the challenges faced in commercial water park operations [10].
Scale eliminated from water systems
Energy consumption reduced by 11% [10]
Maintenance costs dropped immediately
The same circulation dynamics that cause scale in cooling towers also cause scale in salt cells. If Vulcan can eliminate scale in a major commercial facility, it can do the same for your water park.
NOZZLE CLOGGING CASE STUDY
Facility: Avril Supermarket
Location: France
Application: Multiple water systems including nozzles
Persistent scale buildup was clogging nozzles and affecting equipment performance—directly analogous to salt cell plate scaling [11].
"No more clogged nozzles" [11]
Scale eliminated across all systems
Reduced maintenance calls
"No more clogged nozzles" means no more scale-clogged salt cell plates. The same technology that kept Avril's nozzles clear will keep your salt cells producing chlorine at peak efficiency.
One of the most guaranteed ways to maintain and extend the life of your salt cell is to keep your pool water chemistry in check [8].
pH: Keep at lower end of range (7.2-7.4)
Calcium Hardness: Lower end of range (200-300 ppm)
Total Alkalinity: Lower end of range (60-80 ppm)
Phosphates: Below 500 ppb [3]
Elevated pH, Calcium, and TA create scale buildup on the metal plates in the salt cell, and reduce chlorine production [8].
To balance the water properly for a saltwater pool, the LSI must be balanced when the pH reaches its ceiling.
Consider a lower total alkalinity level (around 60 ppm). This will reduce the pH ceiling to a more favorable level, making LSI-balance when the pH rises to that ceiling more feasible.
Vulcan prevents scale regardless of water chemistry. You can maintain optimal pH and alkalinity for bather comfort and chlorine effectiveness—without worrying about scale formation in your salt cells.
Annual Savings from Scale Prevention
Without Vulcan (Reactive Maintenance) | |
Salt cell replacements (10 cells @ $900, 4-year life) | $2,250 annualized |
Acid cleaning labor (20 cells x 6x/year x 2 hours @ $40/hr) | $9,600 |
Cleaning chemicals (acid, PPE, disposal) | $1,800 |
Energy penalty (scaled cells work harder) | $2,400 |
Emergency chlorine purchases (when cells underperform) | $3,500 |
